Kanli Divane

Kanli Divane dates back to the Hellenistic times, but later on Romans and Byzantines also put stheir stamp on it. Fossiles of shells and starfishes suggest Kanli divane was once connected to the sea. This Hellenistic Tower has been a dedication to Zeus in behalf of a priest-king. Its hellenistic origin can be seen in the way of building. Prominent at Kanli Divane is the big chasm in the middle of the settlement. This is the holy chasm, sacred to Zeus Olbios. You can still enter the chasm and will be able to see two reliefs on the walls, depicting a family (Armaronxas relief) and the second shows a warrior. Around the chasm you can find the ruins of several basilica's. They are of Byzantin origin and some of them still bear the Byzantine cross. The Aba Tomb (right picture) has een inscription to which the old name of the city, Canytelis, can be derived.

On the way towards Kanli Divane you pass some necorolises, showing well preserved templetombs and sarcophagi. On some of the graves even the epitaph still shows:  ........if you open this grave you have to pay a fine to the temples of Zeus, Helios, Selene and Athena........  (better take some coins with you, unless you prefer the wrath of the gods.)
